Wealthy Suburbs, Geographic Quirks, and Complex Finances

Norfolk County is one of Massachusetts’ wealthiest counties, with affluent suburbs like Wellesley, Dover, Needham, and Brookline. High-asset divorces here frequently involve investment portfolios, multiple retirement accounts, executive compensation packages, and real estate worth $1 million or more.

Norfolk County has an unusual geographic feature: it is not contiguous. Brookline is an exclave completely surrounded by Suffolk County (Boston), and Cohasset is separated from the rest of Norfolk County by Plymouth County. Despite this, all Norfolk County residents file at the same courthouse in Canton. If you live in Brookline, your divorce is filed in Norfolk County — not Suffolk County. This surprises many people.

Many Norfolk County residents work in Boston’s financial, biotech, and healthcare sectors. Compensation packages at companies like Fidelity, State Street, and the major hospital systems often include deferred compensation, stock options, and pension benefits that require specialized knowledge to divide.
